LQ Outpost Hut Trip

Overview

A Canadian hut trip with legendary skiing, a comfortable lodge (with a sauna!), and catered meals! It's perfect!  Experience a ski-touring dreamscape on all aspects of the mountain. You can ski  through steep old growth forest runs like The Machine (one of the best treed runs in the Kootenays). Or work your turns on rolling alpine terrain. Perhaps honing your skills on technical terrain, steep treeline chutes, and alpine couloirs is more your style? Or maybe a full day tour with 900 m runs top to bottom is more your jam? There are plenty of sheltered runs for low vis or stormy days. The Kootenay region is world-renowned for powder skiing and the LQ Outpost is perfectly situated to take advantage of the playful and varied terrain that makes this a ski touring trip of a lifetime.

The hut is situated on the north flank of Mt. Lequereux (pronounced Le-care’-ouu) at an elevation of 7,200’. From the lodge enjoy the incredible views of the Valkyr Range to the west, Valhalla Range to the east and the Selkirk Range to the north. Heated by wood and powered by solar and micro-hydro systems, the Outpost has all the comforts and modern conveniences: indoor plumbing with 3 bathrooms/2 showers, AC power for lights and charging stations. The fully outfitted kitchen is a great space to produce mouth-watering meals. After putting your skis away a wood fired sauna is just a few steps away to complete your ski touring agenda.

Itinerary

Group ability and interest will dictate how much each group is able to ski. The terrain around the LQ Outpost offers everything from 3,000’ runs, incredible tree skiing (for stormy days), and inspiring alpine terrain with summits, couloirs, and open faces.  The terrain we can access is non-glaciated, so there is no need to carry extra glacier travel gear!  An average intermediate group can expect 4-5000’ vertical feet a day which can be 3-5 runs while stronger, expert groups can ski up to 7,000’ vertical in a day.

  • Day Before Trip:  Arrive in Nakusp in the afternoon, group meeting @6PM to meet and go over the trip and answer last minute questions. There are no restaurants open early on Sunday so buy a breakfast sandwich at Hoss & Jill Bistro on Saturday or BYO breakfast.
  • Day 1: 8 AM-Assemble in Burton @Valkyr Adventures Staging Area and fly in. Check in at the hut, eat and have a safety orientation followed by a shorter tour to check out the terrain and assess snow conditions.  Return to the hut for dinner and relaxation.
  • Days 2-7: Eat a hearty breakfast and full-day ski tours based on group abilities and conditions.  Upon returning to the hut each evening, dinner will be served up and we will have time for relaxation and sauna sessions.
  • Day 8:  Pack up and be ready for our morning flight back to the staging area.  We can expect to be back in Burton by late morning, where we can high five and start the trip back home.
